For storage tank applications, detecting various hydrocarbon leaks, will use a combination of two distinct technologies. These include a field acquisition module that will be able to quickly and accurately detect the presence of leakage hydrocarbons with the use of a linear sensor cable. The main advantage of this technology is to be able to easily be deployed in existing tanks farms – with no disruptions to existing operations and to be used in new tanks.

The matrix chart will enable anyone to very easily determine the number of detection elements to be used on an application.

SENSOR DETECTOR

The sensor element is based on sensitive semi conductive elastomer (silicone-based) and the detection principle is depicted below:

  • Electrical conduction due to Carbon Black
  • Ability to absorb non-conductive liquids (HC’s or solvents)

In case of physical contact of elastomer jacket with liquid hydrocarbons or with high-concentration of VOC/fumes, the electrical resistance of the sensing element increases quickly. Sensor reaction is fully reversible as inorganic sensor material does not interact  chemically with the hydrocarbon.

Once VOC evaporate from the sensing element, the electrical resistance will return to normal.

Liquid hydrocarbons can be removed using appropriate solvent (as light naphtha).
